LASER HEAD REPLACEMENT
NOTE: Exercise extreme care. Cleanliness of optics is essential. Refer to
Service Procedure 8503-01-0060 for optic cleanliness. Refer to drawing 7121-99-
6700, 7121-99-6780 and 7122-99-3298 for specific details.
Avoid the need to clean the optics other than by gently blowing the dust off of them
with filtered, compressed nitrogen or air. If the laser rod needs cleaning, gently wipe
with methanol, acetone, or propanol.
CAUTION: This laser system does not have a fast discharge high voltage dump
resistor. It takes approximately 16 minutes for the high voltage to discharge from
2000 VDC to 40 VDC. To discharge the high voltage quickly, set the HV to 0 volts
when the actual voltage is greater than 1000 volts and pulse the laser. HOWEVER,
DO NOT PULSE THE LASER AT A VOLTAGE THAT WILL GIVE > 60j OF HEAD
ENERGY. WAIT FOR THE HEAD TO BLEED DOWN. This will discharge it to less
than 100 VDC but not to zero. 100 volts can be lethal with this size capacitor. Wait
until the voltage is less than 40 volts before using a shorting stick. Never work on
the high voltage components until the voltage is measured as zero and a
shorting stick is across the capacitor terminals to ground.
1. The laser must be OFF. Check the high voltage and verify that is at 0 Volts. Unplug
the laser.
2. Remove the top skin. Remove the Laser Rail dust cover.
3. Remove the two fluid lines from the Laser Head.
4. Remove the Lamp trigger wire from the Laser Head.
5. Remove the HV wires and/or trigger assist wires and/or flashlamp wires connected to
the Laser Head.
6. Remove the four screws that secure the Laser Head to the Monolithic Rail.
7. Remove the Laser Head from the Laser Rail.
8. Install the New Laser Head to the Monolithic Laser Rail. Refer to 7121-99-6700,
7121-99-6780 and 7122-99-3298drawing for specific details. Tighten screws until the
lock washers just start to compress. Do not flatten lock washers.
9. Perform an alignment verification; for GL systems refer to Service Procedure 8503-
01-0610; for GL PLUS, GL 18mm and GL LE refer to Service Procedure 8503-01-
0690; for MGL refer to Service Procedures 8503-01-0825 and 8503-01-0826.

Candela GentleLase Laser Head Information

There are several reasons why the laser head can go bad. First, a water leak in the laser head can cause pressure to build up and break the laser rod, which is a device through which the laser goes and cause the rod to crack. One singular crack can make the laser head stop working.

Secondly, there is a reason why we are adamant about the laser being in a spotless-clean environment. If there is a small spec of dust on the optics, the laser will make contact with the dust and thus gradually burn your optic until the laser has nowhere to go except backwards or sideways, which can cause additional components to break. Additionally, dust can also burn laser rod, and even the laser head. It is also important to note that the flow tubes or triple bore can be damaged from water pressure or dust.

Lastly, a Candela GentleLase Pro Laser Head can malfunction or stop working altogether because of a damaged or broken flash lamp. Please pay attention to your lamp life. If you notice your power has decreased significantly, whereby you need more treatments to achieve the same result, it may be time to change your flash lamp.

In order to extend the life of your laser machine, we recommend a preventative maintenance service on your machine every six months. This will help ensure the safety of your patients, your investment, and your business, as a broken machine can cause delays and inability to follow through on advertised services or scheduled appointments.
